Many of my books stress the duality of existence. People are both good and bad; seasons change from cold to hot; light fades into darkness. I stressed this a great deal in my novel DEATH ON THE NIGHT OF LOST LIZARDS, in which Hana Keller found herself continually contemplating things that happened in twos, and eventually those dualities led her to a revelation.
In a couple of weeks, we’ll experience Daylight Savings Time, and we’ll all dutifully turn back our clocks to create another duality–evenings filled with light will be plunged into darkness, and we will be on our way to winter. The new darkness doesn’t generally bother me because I love the cold season. Brisk, cold weather invigorates me, and I accomplish more than I generally do in the summer. Even I will admit, though, that if I run out at five p.m. for a quick errand, it feels as though it may as well be midnight.
We all have to adjust to the new darkness, but we can all count on the brilliance of morning light. I hope that, like me, you are enjoying this mild, extended fall, and that when the early darkness comes, you will welcome it as an ambassador to the warm and happy holidays. 🙂
